Seymour Weisberger never had a chance to reach 100 years old today. Instead, he sacrificed his life for our freedom.

He was born on September 2, 1917 in Pennsylvania. His parents were both born in Austria and, since they were Jewish, it was fortunate that they came to America. His father worked as a commercial trader. Seymour had an older sister and a younger brother. By 1940 Seymour had completed four years of college at Miami University and worked as a clerk while living with his parents.

He enlisted in the army on January 22, 1942. His younger brother enlisted two weeks later.

Seymour became a captain in the 5th Photographic Reconnaissance Group. This unit was assigned to the 12th Air Force in the Mediterranean theater and provided tactical aerial reconnaissance for the Allied ground forces in Sicily and Italy. It was equipped with specially modified B-25 Mitchells.

On April 20, 1945, just days from the end of the war in Europe, Captain Weisberger was a passenger on a B-17 named Mary Rose. It was flying northeast of Caserta, Italy when it struck a mountain. All twenty men onboard were killed. It was a brass heavy flight that included two lieutenant colonels, one major, four captains, and four lieutenants.

His grave is at Rose Hill Burial Park in Fairlawn, Ohio.

Thank you Seymour for your sacrifice. Let's Earn It for Seymour.
