August Scheidt never had a chance to reach 100 years old today. Instead, he sacrificed his life for our freedom.
He was born on October 9, 1917 in South Dakota. His German speaking parents were both born in Russia. His father worked as a farmer and later as an auto garage clerk in Nebraska. Still later he worked as a night foreman. August had two older brothers, an older sister, a younger brother and a younger sister. By 1940 August has completed two years of high school and had married Margaret Eirick. He worked as a laborer.
He enlisted in the navy on May 24, 1943 and became a storekeeper 3rd class. Scheidt's service include his final assignment on the destroyer USS Daly. Daly sortied on March 27, 1945 to provide patrol and fire support for the invasion of Okinawa. On April 28 a kamikaze plane crashed a mere 25 yards off the port beam. The plane's bomb exploded. Sixteen sailors were injured and three were killed including Scheidt.
His grave is at Wyuka Cemetery in Lincoln, Nebraska. His widow remarried after his death and died in 2004.
