Merton B. Crisman never had a chance to reach 100 years old today. Instead, he sacrificed his life for our freedom.
He was born on April 9, 1918 in Florida. His parents Merton and Carolyn were born in New York and Florida, respectively. Merton had one older brother. By 1940 he was working as a clerk for a food machinery business.
He was drafted into the army on March 4, 1941. He became a staff sergeant in Company D, 1st Battalion, 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division. The 30th ID arrived on Omaha Beach on D+4. It moved to the front to replace 29th ID units that had taken heavy losses.
Sgt. Crisman was killed on July 10, 1944. His unit was engaged in contested hedgerow fighting in Normandy at this time.
His grave is at Dunedin Cemetery in Dunedin, Florida.
Last year on this date I profiled Robert Whitman, who served on the ill fated final voyage of the USS Indianapolis. You can read about Robert here.
