Holstein Harvey III never had a chance to reach 100 years old today. Instead, he sacrificed his life for our freedom.

Holstein was born on November 6, 1918 in Delaware. His father Holstein Harvey Jr. was also born in Delaware, his mother Florence was born in Virginia. His father worked in a grocery. In 1940, Holstein was in his second year of college.

He enlisted in the U. S. Army on February 17, 1941 in Philadelphia and served as a 2nd Lt. with the 27th Calvary Reconnaissance Troop of the 27th Infantry Division. In June 1944 the 27th ID landed on Saipan in the Northern Mariana Islands and took part in fierce combat to liberate the island from the Japanese. The invasion force encountered a fierce and well-prepared resistance from the Japanese troops who controlled the commanding heights looming over the beach. Artillery, snipers and automatic weapons took a deadly toll with casualties mounting under the remorseless barrage.

Holstein was killed in action on Saipan on 2 July 1944, seven days before the island was officially secured. In all, the Americans lost more than 3,400 soldiers and marines during the 24 days of the Battle of Saipan.

His grave is at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu, HI. According to his gravestone, Holstein was decorated with the Silver Star but I have not been able to find details of the citation.

Thank you Holstein for your sacrifice. Let's Earn It for Holstein.

This profile was written by Bob Fuerst. "I’m a NASA engineer, B-17 Flying Fortress enthusiast, and amateur genealogist so this kind of research is an ideal outlet for me. But more than anything, it’s a way to express my sincere appreciation for The Greatest Generation and the sacrifices that they made, especially those who made the ultimate sacrifice. They should never be forgotten and I’m grateful to Don for allowing me to play a small part in honoring them."

Last year on this date I profiled Jewell Graham of the 89th Infantry Division. You can read about Jewell here.
