Anthony "Todo" Fasino never had a chance to reach 100 years old today. Instead, he sacrificed his life for our freedom.

He was born on March 8, 1919 in Ohio. His parents Thomas and Santa were both born in Italy and moved to America in 1918. His father worked as a contractor laborer. His mother died in 1931. Anthony had four older sisters and two younger brothers. By 1940 Anthony had completed seven years of schooling. He was living with his father and brothers and worked as a laborer.

He was drafted into the army on October 8, 1942. He rose to the rank of sergeant in Company B, 1st Battalion, 106th Infantry Regiment, 27th Infantry Division. A year later younger brother Frank, then 18, also joined the army. He became a private in the 357th Infantry Regiment, 90th Infantry Division.

Frank was killed in action in France on July 8, 1944. At that time Anthony was fighting the Japanese on Saipan.

The 27th ID landed on Okinawa on April 9, 1945, eight days after the initial landings. It was sent to the front lines facing the enemy in the south. It began its attack against a dominating ridge line south of Machinato and Kakazu on April 19. Sgt. Fasino was wounded in battle and died on April 20.

Anthony and Frank are buried at Calvary Cemetery in Cleveland, Ohio.

Thank you Anthony and Frank for your sacrifice. Let's Earn It for the Fasino brothers.

Last year on this date I profiled Ensign Ira Jeffery who was serving on the USS California during the Japanese surprise attack on Pearl Harbor.. You can read about Ira here.
