Anthony Greco never had a chance to reach 100 years old today. Instead, he sacrificed his life for our freedom.

He was born on August 5, 1919 in New York. His parents Joseph and Lucy were both born in Italy. His father worked as a tailor. Anthony had one older brother and two older sisters. By 1940 he had completed four years of high school and was living at home while working as a photography runner. At some point he married Genevieve Cattat.

He was drafted into the army in February 1941. He rose to the rank of staff sergeant in Company K, 3rd Infantry Battalion, 254th Infantry Regiment, 63rd Infantry Division. The 63rd ID elements began arriving in France in December 1944. The infantry regiments were spilt up and sent to support different divisions in the 7th Army on the south end of the Allied lines. The 254th IR was sent to help the 44th Infantry Division near Colmar, France.

Sgt. Greco was killed in action on January 24, 1945, the final day of his regiment's successful attack on Hill 216. Six days later his wife died after a short illness (a broken heart?).

His grave is at St. Johns Cemetery in Rome, New York.

Thank you Sgt. Greco for your sacrifice. Let's Earn It for Anthony.

Last year on this date I profiled Benjamin Jackson, 545th Field Artillery Battalion. You can read about Benjamin Jackson here.
