James Woodrow Richardson never had a chance to reach 100 years old today. Instead, he sacrificed his life for our freedom.

He was born on December 3, 1919 in Pennsylvania. His parents William and Ida were also both born in Pennsylvania. His father worked as a shop machinist and later as a gears forging foreman. James had two older brothers and one younger sister.

He enlisted in the US Navy. By March 1942 he was serving on the submarine USS Grayling. By May 1943 he was serving on the submarine USS Trout in time for her ninth patrol where he was a chief torpedoman's mate.

Trout began its eleventh and final patrol out of Pearl Harbor on February 8, 1944. Its destination was the East China Sea. On February 29, 1944 a Japanese transport carrying army troops was sunk and a passenger liner was damaged by torpedoes fired from an American submarine in the area assigned to Trout. Japanese claimed sinking a submarine in the area on the same day, but there is also a chance the American sub sank itself with a torpedo misfired into a circular run as happened with USS Tang.

Trout never came back, so the Japanese records probably relate to the loss of this submarine with all 81 hands onboard including TMC Richardson.

He is remembered at the Honolulu Memorial.

Thank you TMC Richardson for your sacrifice. Let's Earn It for James.

Last year on this date I profiled Anzio fallen Robert Myers, 34th Infantry Division. You can read about Robert here.
