Winford Fred McVey never had a chance to reach 100 years old today. Instead, he sacrificed his life for our freedom.

Announcement: In just a few days we will be starting a project that will result in the stories of all 400,000 plus of the World War 2 fallen at one online location. There will be an accompanying smart phone app to allow users visiting any war memorial to scan the fallen serviceman's name and be linked to his story. Watch this blog or join the WW2 Fallen 100 Facebook page to learn of upcoming details.

Winford was born on February 9, 1920 in Georgia. His parents Sidney and Annie were also both born in Georgia. His father worked as a farm laborer and later as a farmer. Winford was an only child. By 1940 Winford had completed four years of high school and was working as a machinist helper.

He enlisted in the US Navy in January 1942. He became an aviation machinist mate 3rd class. He was sent to serve in the 103rd Patrol Bombing Squadron which flew PB4Y-1 Liberators on anti-submarine missions while based in Newfoundland, Canada.

On August 7, 1943, AMM McVey's plane was on a training mission over Placentia Bay when it crashed into the sea for unknown reasons. No one onboard survived and only Winford McVey's body was recovered.

His grave is at Sugar Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in Blue Ridge, Canada.

Thank you AMM McVey for your sacrifice. Let's Earn It for Winford.

Last year on this date I profiled Monte Cassino fallen Leonard Bartelt, 34th Infantry Division. You can read about Leonard here.

On behalf of the fallen, if you would like to see more people become aware of this project to honor the WW2 fallen, be sure to share with others on Twitter, Facebook, etc. Thanks for your interest!

I created this video to explain why I started this project: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vXt8QA481lY.
