Marion "Max" Jones never had a chance to reach 100 years old today. Instead, he sacrificed his life for our freedom.

He was born on March 1, 1918 in North Carolina. His parents Oliver and Cornelia were born in Arkansas and Tennessee, respectively. His father worked as a Presbyterian Church minister. Max had two older sisters and four older brothers. By 1940 Max had completed four years of college and was living with his parents.

He enlisted in the army on August 19, 1941 and volunteered for the Army Air Forces. He became a first lieutenant in the headquarter squadron of the IX Bomber Command. IX BC became active in the war when it arrived in Egypt on November 17, 1942. It was composed of bomb groups with B-25 Mitchells, B-24 Liberators, and B-17 Flying Fortresses.

Lt. Jones died in Egypt on November 24, 1942. I don't know if he was a passenger in a plane that crashed, had an accident on land, or died of some other cause. If anyone is able to find out more, I would like to provide more details here.

His grave is at Green Hill Cemetery in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Thank you Max for your sacrifice. Let's Earn It for Max.

Last year on this date I profiled Albin Karwoski, 7th Armored Division. You can read about Albin here.
