Daniel Victor Ohman never had a chance to reach 100 years old today. Instead, he sacrificed his life for our freedom.

He was born on March 4, 1918 in Minnesota. His parents Victor and Nellie were born in Sweden and Minnesota, respectively. Her parents were from Sweden. After moving his family to Chicago, his father worked as a proprietor of wooden tanks. Daniel had one younger brother. By 1940 Daniel and completed four years of high school. He worked as a bookkeeper while living with his family.

He was drafted into the army on August 6, 1941 and then volunteered for the Army Air Forces. He became a second lieutenant and bombardier in the 323rd Bombardment Squadron, 91st Bombardment Group which was equipped with B-17 Flying Fortresses.

On July 30, 1943 Lt. Ohman was the bombardier of the B-17 Man-O-War. It successfully participated in the mission to bomb the Messerschmitt factory in Kassel, Germany. On the return leg to England, Man-O-War was attacked and shot down by German fighter planes. Eight of the men onboard were killed, including Lt. Ohman, when the plane crashed in Opijnen, Netherlands.

His grave is at Opijnen Protestant Church in Opijnen, Netherlands.

Thank you Daniel for your sacrifice. Let's Earn It for Daniel.

Last year on this date I profiled Irving Bloomstein who served with the 82nd Airborne during the Battle of the Bulge. You can read about Irving here.
