Earlington Edward "Early" Davis never had a chance to reach 100 years old today. Instead, he sacrificed his life for our freedom.

He was born on April 14, 1919 in Texas. His parents Lonnie and Connie were also both born in Texas. His father worked as a farmer and lived to be 102 years old. Early had a younger brother named Barron.

He was drafted into the army on October 5, 1942. He became a private first class in Company K, 3rd Battalion, 351st Infantry Regiment, 88th Infantry Division (nicknamed "Blue Devils"). Meanwhile his brother also joined the army and served in the 41st Armored Infantry Regiment, 2nd Armored Division.

The 88th ID arrived in Naples Italy in January 1944. It fought in the campaign to advance on Rome and 88th ID troops were among the first to enter Rome. During the summer it fought in the Apennine Mountains. It opened the assault on the Gothic Line on September 21, 1944. PFC Davis was killed on October 12, 1944 while his unit was advancing toward Mount Grande. PFC Davis was one of 2,298 Blue Devils killed in the war.

Barron also became a private first class. His unit first saw action in Sicily in July 1943. After Sicily was secured, the 2nd Armored was sent to England to prepare for the invasion of France. It landed on Omaha Beach three days after D-Day. After participating in the Normandy breakout, it drove across France and ended up at Marienburg where it successful breached the Siegfried Line in early October. During the Battle of the Bulge the 2nd Armored slowed down and then repealed the Germans on the north side of the bulge. Barron died on February 28, 1945. On that day the 2nd Armored conducted a full scale attack to take the German towns of Vierwinden, Grefath, and Hammerden.

Early's grave is at Rather Cemetery in Hurstown, Texas. His brother Barron is buried in the same cemetery.

Thank you Earlington and Barron for your sacrifice. Let's Earn It for the Davis brothers.

Last year on this date I profiled Chester Harp, 76th Infantry Division. You can read about Chester here.
