George Clinton Davis never had a chance to reach 100 years old today. Instead, he sacrificed his life for our freedom.
He was born on April 2, 1919 in Texas. His parents James and Ethel Maude were born in Kansas and Colorado, respectively. His father worked as a government bookkeeper and later a produce fruit checker. George had an older brother and a younger sister. By 1940 George had completed four years of high school. He was living with his parents and working as a butcher.
After standing as a best man at his brothers wedding, George volunteered for the army in November 1940. Although he started as an enlisted man, he rose to the rank of 1st lieutenant in the HQ Company, 2nd Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division. The 508th PIR joined the 82nd Airborne in England in March 1944.
On D-Day the majority of the 508th PIR troops were mis-dropped all over the Cotentin Peninsula. Lt. Davis successfully landed but, at some point in the next few days, a nearby fellow officer stepped on a landmine that gravely wounded Lt. Davis. He was sent to a field hospital, but died of his wounds on June 17, 1944.
His grave is at San Jose Burial Park in San Antonio, Texas.
Last year on this date I profiled Devil's Brigade Private Louis Christensen. You can read about Louis here.
