Eldon Wendel Abbott never had a chance to reach 100 years old today. Instead, he sacrificed his life for our freedom.

He was born on July 17, 1919 in Indiana. His parents William and Verna were also both born in Indiana. His father worked as an odd jobs laborer during the Great Depression and later as a road worker. His mother suffered from epilepsy and died in 1931. Eldon had one older brother, two older sisters, and two younger brothers. His father married again to a woman with four children. They two more sons and one daughter. By 1940 Eldon had completed three years of high school and was still living at home and worked as a farm laborer.

He was drafted into the army on June 11, 1942. He became a sergeant in Company D, 1st Battalion, 313th Infantry Regiment, 79th Infantry Division.

The 79th Infantry Division joined the Normandy campaign on June 19, 1944. The Division was involved in a heavy engagement with the enemy at Fort de Roule, just before entering Cherbourg. Sgt. Abbott was a reconnaissance sergeant who had to find advanced positions for his machine gun squad. It was during this engagement on June 23, 1944 that Sgt. Abbott was killed in action.

His grave is at Fulton Cemetery in Fulton, Indiana.

Thank you Sgt. Abbott for your sacrifice. Let's Earn It for Eldon.

Last year on this date I profiled Silver Star hero and company commander Cecil McMahan, 2nd Armored Division. You can read about Cecil here.
