Ramon Torres Gonzalez never had a chance to reach 100 years old today. Instead, he sacrificed his life for our freedom.

He was born on September 5, 1919 in Dallas, Texas. His parents were named Felipe and Bacilia. His father may have died while Ramon was a boy because his mom had a different last name on his headstone application. By 1940 Ramon was living on his own and had completed a grammar school level of education and worked as a farm hand and also worked for a railroad.

He volunteered for the US Army on December 13, 1941. He became a medic in the 105th Infantry Regiment, 27th Infantry Division with a Tec 4 rank. The 27th Infantry Division was the first division to be deployed in World War 2. It was in Hawaii by May 1942 and fought in battles at Makin Atoll and Eniwetok Atoll. On June 16, 1944 it was part of the initial landing on Saipan.

The 27th ID's final campaign was Okinawa. Cpl. Gonzalez would have been involved in treating the wounded when the 27th ID went on the offensive on April 19, 1945 in attacking the Japanese defending ridges south of Machinato. On May 4, the Japanese, who always preferred to attack than defend, made one of their costly but failed counterattacks. Cpl. Gonzalez was killed on that day, most likely in the act of trying to save the lives of fellow GIs.

His grave is at Oakland Cemetery in Dallas, Texas.

Thank you Tec 4 Gonzalez for your sacrifice. Let's Earn It for Ramon.

Richard Dietrich, 82nd Airborne was born one year earlier to the day. You can read about Richard here.
