Buster Paul Meadows never had a chance to reach 100 years old today. Instead, he sacrificed his life for our freedom.
Buster was born on May 14, 1920 in Ridgeview, West Virginia. His parents Lonnie and Mary were also both born in West Virginia. His father worked as a carpenter. Buster had one older sister, four younger brothers, and one younger sister. By 1940 Buster had completed four years of high school. He was living at home and was working as a clerk.
He joined the army three days before the attack on Pearl Harbor. He became a first lieutenant and pilot in the 11th Bombardment Squadron, 341st Bombardment Group, 14th Air Force that was equipped with B-25 Mitchells. The 341st BG began operation in India in September 1942. Its chief area of operations until 1944 was Burma. After that it was sent to operate out of bases in China. Lt. Meadows joined the unit after it was in China. A major focus was destroying bridges to disrupt Japanese supply lines.
On January 18, 1945, Lt. Meadows' B-25 crashed while making a landing at the airfield in Chihkiang, China. He and one other airman were killed. It was his first mission.
His grave is at Boone Memorial Park in Madison, West Virginia.
