William Frances Impey never had a chance to reach 100 years old today. Instead, he sacrificed his life for our freedom.
William was born on May 8, 1920 in Houston, Missouri. His parents David and Louise were also both born in Missouri. His father worked as a lawyer. William had one older sister, one younger sister, and one younger brother. By 1940 William had completed four years of high school and was still living at home.
He volunteered for the army in September 1940. He was sent to North Africa in April 1943. I don't know what unit he was in. I don't know the circumstances, but at some point he volunteered for to be part of the 10th Mountain Division which arrived in Italy in December 1944. There were nearly 7,000 replacements needed to fill the places of those lost from January through May 1945. He served in Company L, 3rd Battalion, 85th Mountain Infantry Regiment. He reached the rank of sergeant.
Sgt. Impey was killed in action on April 15, 1945 when he was felled by a German sniper near Hill 913. This was just a few days after future US senator Bob Dole, who served in the same regiment, was grievously injured. Dole was one of more than 1,400 Mountaineers wounded during this seven day push. Sgt. Impey was one of 370 killed during this same period.
His grave is at Pine Lawn Cemetery in Houston, Missouri.
Last year on this date I profiled B-25 pilot Henry Sabotka. You can read about Henry here.
