Edgar Edward Andrews never had a chance to reach 100 years old today. Instead, he sacrificed his life for our freedom.
Edgar was born on August 8, 1920 in Illinois. His parents Charlie and Nellie (Meeks) were also both born in Illinois. His father worked as a fireman. Edgar had three older brothers, three younger sisters and a younger brother named Ky. By 1940 Edgar had completed two years of high school and was still living at home.
He was drafted into the army in October 1942. He reached the rank of private first class in Company I, 22nd Tank Battalion, 11th Armored Division. The 11th AD got to England in October 1944. After two months of further training in landing in Normandy on December 16, 1944, the day the Germans launched their winter offensive. The 11th AD was sent to block the German advance between Givet and Sedan.
PFC Andrews was killed in action on March 3, 1945. At that time the 22nd Tank Battalion attacked across the Prum River in Germany with the objective of taking Gerolstein.
One month later his younger brother Ky, a private in 802nd Tank Destroyer Battalion, was wounded in action on April 13, 1945. The 802nd TDB was in action in Normandy in July 1944. I don't know if Ky begin his combat service at this time or if he joined as a replacement at a later time. On April 13, Ky's unit was attached to the 95th Infantry Division and was operating near Brackel, Germany. His name is listed as a casualty for that day's 802nd TDB unit journal having died of his wounds on the day he was wounded.
