Troops from 325th Glider Infantry Regiment in Belgium, December 1944, the month Pvt. Bloomstein died. http://www.ww2incolor.com/us-army/USA-E-Ardennes-p346.html |
Irving Bloomstein could have been 100 years old today.
He was born on March 4, 1917 in New York. His YIddish speaking parents were both born in Russia and came to America in 1905. His father was a operator in the ladies dresses industry. Irving had a younger brother and a younger sister.
Irving enlisted in the army on April 23, 1943. Prior to enlisting he had completed two years of high school and was working in the printing industry. He was married to the former Mildred Olstein.
He served as a private in Company C, 325th Glider Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division. He was probably a replacement since the regiment was activated the year before he enlisted. We don't know if he participated in glider landings at Normandy for D-Day or in Belgium for Operation Market Garden. He was part of the 82nd Division's role in the Battle of the Bulge. His unit was fighting against the Germans around Werbomont when he died of wounds on December 25, 1944.
His remains were returned to be buried at Long Island National Cemetery.
