Arvil Davidson never had a chance to reach 100 years old today. Instead, he sacrificed his life for our freedom.

He was born on June 7, 1918 in Arkansas. His parents Robert and Laura were also both born in Arkansas. His father worked as a farmer. Arvil was the oldest child. He had four younger sisters and three younger brothers. By 1940 Arvil had completed a grammar school level of education and was working as a farm hand.

He was drafted into the Army on June 2, 1942. He became a private and medic assigned to the 180th Infantry Regiment, 45th Infantry Division. The 180th IR fought in the Sicily and Salerno campaigns. Next it was selected to take part in the Anzio invasion. The Americans landed on January 22, 1944. On February 18, 1944 the Germans launched a major counterattack that nearly succeeded in overrunning the 180th IR. Casualties were heavy and among the killed in action that day was Pvt. Davidson.

His grave is at Manila Cemetery in Manila, Arkansas.

Thank you Arvil for your sacrifice. Let's Earn It for Arvil.

Last year on this date I profiled MIA C-46 pilot Murray Jacobs and the singer/actor Dean Martin. You can read about Murray and Dean here.
