George R. Williams never had a chance to reach 100 years old today. Instead, he sacrificed his life for our freedom.
He was born on July 7, 1918 in Illinois. His parents Riley and Elsie were also both born in Illinois. His father worked as a barber. George had an older sister and two younger sisters. He joined the Marines in July 1937. He served in the 6th Marine Regiment which was sent to China, but was back in California by April 1938.
He re-enlisted in the Marines three days after Pearl Harbor. He became a platoon sergeant in Company D, 1st Battalion, 22nd Marine Regiment, 6th Marine Division. He was killed in an accident on September 22, 1943 while his unit was in training in Samoa.
His grave is at Maplewood Cemetery in Rantoul, Illinois.
Last year on this date I profiled Silver Star hero Jake Lowe, 90th Infantry Division. You can read about Jake here.
