Richard F. Fogle never had a chance to reach 100 years old today. Instead, he sacrificed his life for our freedom.

Announcement: Later this month I will be starting a project that will result in the stories of all 400,000 plus of the World War 2 fallen at one online location. There will be an accompanying smart phone app to allow users visiting any war memorial to scan the fallen serviceman's name and be linked to his story. Watch this blog or join the WW2 Fallen 100 Facebook page to learn of upcoming details.

He was born on January 7, 1920 in Ohio. His parents Emanuel and Mary Louise were also both born in Ohio. His father worked as a farmer and later as a general manager for a biscuit company. Richard had one older brother. Richard completed four years of high school and worked as a bank clerk.

He enlisted in the army in October 1941. He married Dorothy Louise in October 1942, shortly after graduating from officers candidate school. He eventually became a captain in the 358th Infantry Regiment, 90th Infantry Division. He may have been a company commander or a regimental staff officer. The 90th ID arrived in England in April 1944 and immediately began training for the invasion of France. It was in action in Normandy the day after D-Day.

By July 21, the 90th ID had reached the Seves River. On July 22, 1944, the 358th IR was given the assignment of taking the island at Saint-Germain-sur-Seves, which required attacking through marshes. The Americans decided against a night attack -- they had suffered too many casualties learning how to fight in the Normandy hedgerows and those in command thought the new replacements could not pull off a night attack. The Germans they faced were experienced paratroopers backed up by artillery and tanks. The attacked failed. Captain Fogle and one other officer were killed along with seven men. Ten other officers and one hundred and eighty men were injured.

His grave is at Chapel Heights Memory Gardens in Marion, Ohio.

Thank you Captain Fogle for your sacrifice. Let's Earn It for Richard.

VINCENT GARDENIA
The well known character actor Vincent Gardenia was born on the exact same date as Richard Fogle. Gardenia was born in Naples, Italy. His family moved to America when he was two years old. He grew up in Brooklyn, New York. As a child he participated in his family's acting troupe performing Italian language melodrama.

During World War 2, Gardenia spent a couple of years in the army.

After the war he pursued an acting career. He first found roles off-Broadway, then on-Broadway, and then in films and television. He was twice nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. He was a regular on the TV show All in the Family. He died in 1992.

Last year on this date I profiled Robert Gillis, 78th Infantry Division. You can read about Robert here.

On behalf of the fallen, if you would like to see more people become aware of this project to honor the WW2 fallen, be sure to share with others on Twitter, Facebook, etc. Thanks for your interest!

I created this video to explain why I started this project: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vXt8QA481lY.
