Francis Howard Broughton never had a chance to reach 100 years old today. Instead, he sacrificed his life for our freedom.
He was born on June 7, 1919 in North Carolina. His parents Charles and Lula were also both born in North Carolina. His father worked as a dry goods store merchant. Francis had two older brothers, one older sister, and two younger brothers.
He volunteered for the US Navy on December 26, 1941. He trained as a pharmacist mate. I am not sure where he served for most of the war, but by January 1945 he was assigned to 28th Marine Regiment, 5th Marine Division.
On March 3, 1945, twelve days after the US Marines landed on Iwo Jima, the 28th Marine Regiment was given the assignment to attack north from positions on Nishi Ridge. They ran into stiff resistance in the center of their attack. Casualties mounted fast as the men advanced through a maze of Japanese emplacements hidden in the rugged terrain. Some units were so depleted they had to be withdrawn. PHM2 Broughton was killed this day, no doubt while doing his duty of aiding the wounded.
His grave is at Greenwood Cemetery at Dunn, North Carolina.
Last year on this date I profiled medic Arvil Davidson, 45th Infantry Division who fought at Anzio. You can read about Arvil here.
