Burton A. Bingham never had a chance to reach 100 years old. Instead, he sacrificed his life for our freedom.

Last year I was not able to write a profile everyday from September to November because I was studying for the Certified Financial Planner test (I passed!). I feel my project to honor one U.S. serviceman for each day of the war would be incomplete if I left them off. As I have time, I am going back and adding profiles for the days I missed.

Burton was born on September 15, 1918 in New Jersey. His father, born in Canada, died sometime before 1930. His mother Anna was born in Germany and came to the US in 1895. Burton had three older brothers and one older sister. After graduating from high school, Burton worked for an insurance company.

He was drafted into the army on December 8, 1942. He rose to the rank of sergeant in Company B, 237th Combat Engineer Battalion which was attached to the 4th Infantry Division. While in training in Camp Carson, Colorado, he married May Mortenson. He first overseas posting was in North Africa in December 1943 after which he was sent to England.

Sgt. Bingham was one of the first men to land on Utah Beach on D-Day. The engineers went in five minutes before the infantry to demolish the obstacles on the beach. He was wounded that day and died four days later on June 10, 1944.

His grave is at Harleigh Cemetery in Camden, New Jersey. I don't know what happened to his widow.

Thank you Sgt. Bingham for your sacrifice. Let's Earn It for Burton.
