William H. Momblow never had a chance to reach 100 years old today. Instead, he sacrificed his life for our freedom.

He was born on December 17, 1918 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. His parents William A. and Delta were also born in Wisconsin and Indiana, respectively. His father worked as a tool shop tool maker. William had two younger brothers and three younger sisters. By 1940 William had completed four years of college. He was living at home and worked as a salesman.

He enlisted in the army on September 11, 1941, attended officer candidate school and became a second lieutenant in Company K, 3rd Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division (nicknamed "Rock of the Marne").

The 3rd ID was in battle early on in Morocco in November 1942. It fought in Sicily and at Salerno in the summer of 1943. By October it was involved in heavy fighting crossing the Volturno River and the Battle of Monte Cassino. During the campaign in southern Italy, the 3rd ID suffered 3,265 battle casualties (including 683 killed) and an incredible 12,959 non-battle casualties.

The 3rd ID was relieved from their Monte Cassino position on November 17, 1943. Lt. Momblow died on November 21, 1943 either from previously sustained wounds or from non-battle related causes.

His grave is at Woodlawn Cemetery in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Thank you Lt. Momblow for your sacrifice. Let's Earn It for William.

Last year on this date I profiled Silver Star hero and Wildcat pilot Dupont Landry who fought at the Battle of Santa Cruz Islands. You can read about Dupont here.
