Robert Jack Myers never had a chance to reach 100 years old today. Instead, he sacrificed his life for our freedom.

He was born on December 3, 1918 in Kansas. His parents Henry and Goldie were born in Illinois and Missouri, respectively. His father worked as a blacksmith for a lead mine. He died in 1937. Robert had four younger brothers and three younger sisters. By 1940 Robert had completed four years of high school and was still living at home.

He volunteered for the army on October 12, 1944. He eventually became a first sergeant with Company F, 2nd Battalion, 168th Infantry Regiment, 34th Infantry Division (nicknamed "Red Bull").
The 34th ID saw action in Algeria, Tunisia, Salerno, and Cassino before it was selected to participate in the Anzio landing. Sgt. Myers survived battles where units sustained as much as 80 percent casualties.

The 34th ID arrived in the Anzio sector on March 25, 1944, two months after the initial landing that had failed to accomplish the anticipated results and would end up costing 43,000 Allied casualties, included more than 7,000 killed. Sgt. Myers was leading a bunch of green replacements on this day. They relieved a regiment of the 3rd Infantry Division in an area under easy view of the Germans and their guns. Sgt. Myer was killed while getting his men into their defensive position.

His grave is at Hill Crest Cemetery in Galena, Kansas.

Thank you Sgt. Myers for your sacrifice. Let's Earn It for Robert.

Last year on this date I profiled B-26 pilot William Vroom (yes, that is a real name). You can read about William here.
